Why is Palliative Care Important?

The World Health Organisation predicts that each year, there are around 40 million people that are in need of palliative care.

Palliative care improves the quality of life of patients and their families, who may be dealing with physical, psychological and social issues. But, why is it so important? Find out more here and how Complete Homecare 24 can help.

What is Palliative Care?

Palliative care is there to make a patient with a terminal illness as comfortable as possible. It is hard coming to terms with a terminal illness diagnosis, for you or your loved one. That’s why palliative care services are put in place to ensure those final moments are in a relaxed environment and the pain is eased.

If you have an illness that cannot be cured, palliative care makes you as comfortable as possible by managing your pain and other distressing symptoms. It can also include psychological, religious and social support for you, your family, and any caregivers. Carers aim to treat you as a “whole person”, rather than a terminal case.

What About End of Life Care?

End-of-life care is a type of palliative care that is provided to patients who are nearing the end of their lives. This care plan should begin as soon as the individual requires it. It all depends on the person, as the treatment may only continue for a few days, compared to others that may require palliative care for a year.

This form of palliative care is vitally important in certain circumstances, where residents will benefit from tailored support. It might be possible that some may be expected to die in the coming hours or days. So, having at-home end-of-life care ensures that the individual is properly looked after and is as comfortable as possible.

Is a Palliative Care Plan the Same As End of Life?

No. While it can involve end-of-life care, this type of caring facility is considerably broader and can continue much longer. In palliative care services, the patient is not necessarily at risk of dying soon. In fact, some patients may receive this type of care for years.

Why Are Palliative Care Services Important?

People are living longer than ever before in today’s culture, and even individuals with major chronic conditions can sometimes live considerably longer than previous generations. All thanks to advances in disease treatments. While doctors may be able to prolong the lives of their patients, both the disease and the treatment can cause pain and other unwanted effects.

These programs are crucial, as they allow patients to manage pain and symptoms while still pursuing curative procedures, resulting in an improved quality of life. When a patient is very ill, they realise how precious each day is. While they must still face their illness, palliative care’s assistance in managing pain and other symptoms can make each day a more pleasant experience, allowing patients to make the most of the time they have with their families.
